Hands up who thinks “Critical Illness can’t happen to me”? We sincerely hope that it doesn’t happen to you, but history has shown the risks to be higher than many of us think. Could you be the 1 in 5 men who suffer a illness before their normal retirement age? The risks for women aren't much better. 1 in 6 women suffer a illness before their normal retirement age. Now, are you still sure it couldn’t happen to you?
Critical illness Insurance CoverCritical Illness Insurance pays out a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed with a critical or serious illness covered by your policy or an illness or condition which prevents you from ever working again* (* this is only applicable if your policy contains Total and Permeant Disability cover). The key is - what represents a critical illness?Every insurance company has its own list of illnesses for which its policyholders are covered. The illnesses include many from which you could die as well as many that, whilst not necessarily terminal, would certainly prevent you from working normally (for example blindness, loss of limbs, paralysis etc). Working in association with LifeSearch, we can bring to you top quality cover with the big name insurance companies. Now whilst you’re online, request a quote and a LifeSearch Life Insurance Adviser will call you to discuss your individual requirements and to give you a cheap quotation. Then before you finally decide to buy, you'll be sent a booklet in the post, provided by the proposed insurance company. You’ll will find a full list of the illnesses they’ll insure you against in that booklet. Even with some of the worst illnesses you could survive many yearsSufferers of serious illness such as heart attacks, strokes and cancer often survive with the illness for very many years. During that time earning power may well be nil or only a fraction of what it was previously. Unless you can cope with a big drop in income and possibly an increase in living expenses, then the financial effects could be disastrous. What Critical Illnesses are covered? The types of critical illnesses covered by the insurance do vary between insurance companies but typically they will include the following: -
Employment Cover When you buy Critical Illness Insurance you are also usually insured for Total and Permanent Disability. This means that if you suffer from any illness or condition that prevents you from working again, then you can claim. But before the Insurance Company will pay out, they will want to know that you are too ill to ever work again. The issue is what type of work does your illness prevent you from following? Within most insurance companies, there are normally three alternative definitions of being “too ill to ever work again”. You have to choose one and your choice will significantly affect your premium: -

Critical Illness Insurance is not the same as Terminal Illness insurance A word of caution. Critical Illness Insurance is not the same as Terminal Illness Insurance. First of all Terminal Illness is included at no charge on most good life insurance policies whereas Critical Illness cover can be relatively costly. Terminal Illness Insurance only pays out if you are expected to die from an
illness within 12 months of diagnosis. On the other hand, Critical Illness
Insurance pays out if you are diagnosed with any illness that is included within
your policy’s defined list of critical illnesses. With Critical Illness
Insurance your life expectancy is not an issue. Be aware of the “survival period”.With all policies you have to survive for a minimum number of days following diagnosis in order to claim. 28 days is the norm but some life Insurance Companies have reduced this to 14 days. Please check your proposed policy. The essential point is that if you die within the survival period the claim is not valid. Could the family cope without your income? At some stage most families are likely to cope with reduced income whether it be due to short-term illness or unemployment. But a lump sum payout from Critical illness Insurance would cushion you from the much more devastating financial situation caused by serious illness – long term loss, or drastic reduction of income. Consider the possible implications if you found you had cancer. You should be aware that 35% of men and 46% of women who develop cancer survive at least 5 years. What happens to the family finances during those hard and stressful years? The bills keep coming in and the mortgage still has to be paid. Could you cope with the financial effects of such illness? Critical Illness Insurance is the way to soften the financial consequences of such a possibility. |
